If you like anime, the chances are that at some point you have come across the word 'FanSub'. What does it mean? The answer is actually really simple if you think about it.
A fansub (fan-subtitled) is a version of a foreign film or television programme which has been translated by the fans, and subtitled in a language, different to that of the original.
The most common thing to be FanSubbed into English is Japanese anime, but the phenomenon is much more common in non-English-speaking areas where a wide variety of foreign (especially American) films and TV shows are subtitled and distributed for free online by fans.
Because distribution of fan-subtitled content is a violation of copyright
