Anime merchandise on the highstreet in the UK is something that is extremely hard to find, even in specialist stores...even in this day and age.
Despite anime being a popular throughout the globe for over 20
years, it appears that anime merchandise has not followed in its
foot-steps.
Even now, in 2008, it is extremely hard to get hold of anything
anime, other than anime t-shirts, DVD’s and manga. There are very few
specialist shops here in the UK that sells anything other than these
few items.
It appears that in the UK, one of the only ways you can get
hold of anime merchandise is to use eBay…but there is no guarantee that
the anime stuff you choose to buy will be official. So then we all go
wasting our money on unofficial merchandise, most of which is poor
quality.
The thing is, by buying unofficial anime merchandise, we are
not supporting the companies that make the anime we have come to love
over the years, but in the case of the UK especially, it is extremely
difficult to find anywhere that sells such anime products.
And then there is the issue of importing anime
products…recently a store in Leeds closed as it could no longer afford
to pay the taxes put upon them for importing anime products, so yet
again, it is made even more difficult to get hold of the cool anime
stuff that exists out there.
The UK has a huge anime fan-base that is currently being neglected, and
this needs to be sorted. I know that in comparison to the US the UK
anime fan base is ‘small fry’, but there are still thousands, hundreds
of thousands of us, desperate for merchandise to be easily available in
the UK.
